At this point you may have thought of using an air purifier, but not just any air purifier can remove vocs. Many air purifiers on the market rely on filters to capture suspended particles (particulate matter) in the air, including pm2.5 that you and I often hear about. However, air purifiers that use filters cannot capture vocs in the air, because those filters are usually for micron (um)-sized particles, which also includes common high-efficiency particulate absorbing (hepa) filters. .
However, the size of vocs is about 0.5 to 1.5 nanometers (nm), which is 1,000 times smaller than the suspended particles in the general air. Therefore, filters specially designed to capture air particles cannot block vocs at all. Activated carbon can capture vocs through the principle of "Molecular adsorption" (figure 3).
Simply put, the surface of the activated carbon reacts with the vocs molecules of the mold, so that those vocs molecules "Stick" to the activated carbon one by one to achieve the effect of removing vocs from the air. Therefore, if you want to buy an air purifier to remove mildew at home, remember to buy a model with activated carbon to filter out any mold vocs in the air. However, keeping the environment ventilated and clean is the most important step in preventing mildew.
